Food as Medicine Heart Openers

In the theme of Valentine’s day, I wanted to share my top three heart opening foods. In botanical medicine, heart openers are foods and herbs that are energetically thought to ease and soften the heart. From a scientific perspective, these foods and herbs contain compounds that can also support the blood vessels and heart health.

My top 3 favorite food as medicine heart openers are:

♥️ Beets: Beets contain nitrous oxide, which helps dilate the blood vessels and increase blood flow. I love roasted beets with just about anything, but especially with goat cheese, served on a bed of arugula with a drizzle of EVOO and balsamic reduction.

♥️ Cacao: Cacao is the raw form of cocoa. It is made from dried and fermented cacao beans. Cacao is often used in ceremonies to help open the heart and deepen connection. I love to use it in smoothies and for a healthier “hot cacao” when I am craving chocolate. See my recipe below!

♥️ Rose powder: Rose powder can be used in so many beautiful recipes, from teas and lattes to baked goods. I recently purchased a rose powder from my local co-op by the brand Amina Mundi Herbals and it’s the prettiest pink! 🌹

Heart Opening Rose & Cacao Tonic:

Whisk in 1/2 teaspoon of rose powder, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1-2 tablespoons of cacao powder, and 1-2 teaspoons of local honey or maple syrup. Whisk gently until powders have dissolved fully and liquid is heated.

Blender method:

Add preheated milk and water with 1/2 teaspoon of rose powder, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1-2 tablespoons of cacao powder and 1-2 dates to a blender. Blend on high until dates are broken down.
